Lairoux and the local area

Maison Lairoux Holiday Cottages are only 8km from the historic town of Luçon, once the home of Cardinal Richelieu who was Bishop of Luçon from 1606 - 1623, and who commissioned the imposing cathedral in the town centre. Surrounding the cathedral there are many bars, cafés and shops. There are also lots of restaurants, some with al fresco dining, and in the summer months Luçon holds many musical evenings and summer fayres. There is also a bustling market twice a week, selling local foods, wines and honey.

The village of Lairoux is on the edge of the Marais Communal - an area of outstanding natural beauty - with miles of country lanes to explore, and flat reclaimed marshlands through which to walk or cycle. The marshes flood in winter and bring a host of migratory birds to the area, such as ibis, storks, lapwings, cranes and many others. A new addition to the village is a bread machine in the school car park - selling Pain des Patrons for 1 euro.

The Vendée has a well-kept secret - lots of locally produced wines that are great for drinking now! We are only minutes away from the Fief Vendéen wine route which starts in the pretty town of Mareuil sur Lay and wine tasting afternoons can be arranged with some of the local wine producers.
The area is also renowned for its amazing fresh seafood - with kiosks selling mussels, oysters and the catch of the day down at the harbour at L'Aiguillon sur Mer.

For those looking for more leisurely activities, there are some fantastic country walks, bird watching facilities and prehistoric monuments to explore all within half an hour of Lairoux.

The Vendée is a region of beaches, lush green countryside and many attractions just waiting to be explored.
